Doubles? In Airhockey? How do you do that? If only I had a dollar for every time I have heard that. Yes, it is true. Airhockey does have a doubles event. It is more of a “tag team” style event, though not in a voluntary fashion. Players form their own “Power” teams with Masters often teaming up with other Masters hoping to find that perfect winning chemistry.

What is fascinating about Power Doubles is that you see many more upsets than in a standard singles event. It is not unusual for a team of 2 professionals to pull a huge upset on two seasoned masters. When you are off the table when being scored upon, momentum becomes very critical. Finding a partner whose game compliments your own is often the challenge. Style, stamina, and theme are often the “in” thing. Some teams wear catchy uniforms or jerseys and come up with colorful names.
So the event is simple. Like all other events, it is a double elimination tournament. Matches are best 3 games of 5. Teams are seeded based on the USAA rating system. When your team is up, the opposing team of the lower seed chooses who starts from their opposition and vice versa. A player remains on the table until scored upon. Then his/her partner steps up and takes over until he/she is scored upon. And so on and so on…

The event is very serious but typically more fun and more adrenaline-based. Friendly trash talking is frequent and well accepted. If you’ve never played Airhockey doubles, you ain’t really lived yet. It’s a rush. But don’t take my word for it. Find a teammate and go for it!
